Larry Winans Obituary, LEWISBURG, PA — Larry Winans, co-founder of Jackass Brewing Company and a well-known figure in the Lewisburg and Williamsport brewing community, has died following a severe cardiac arrest that occurred while he was competing in a local Ironman 70.3 triathlon event. According to a statement shared by the Jackass Brewing family, the medical emergency happened during the swim portion of the race.
First responders and medical personnel reportedly made heroic efforts to revive him, but despite all attempts, Winans did not recover. His passing has left family, friends, colleagues, and the wider community in deep mourning as they come to terms with the loss of a man described as both a visionary and a close friend.
Winans was best known as the co-founder of Jackass Brewing Company, which he built alongside his longtime friend Skip Kratzer. What began as a homebrewing hobby between two friends eventually evolved into a full-scale brewery after their production far exceeded personal and informal sharing among friends.
The Lewisburg location of Jackass Brewing Company opened just days before the COVID-19 shutdowns in March 2020, a challenging period that tested the business from its earliest moments. Despite the difficult timing, Winans’ determination and the strong support of the local community helped the brewery survive and grow.
In 2023, the business expanded with the restoration of a historic warehouse in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, further cementing its place in the region’s craft brewing scene. Those close to the company have said that Winans left his mark on every part of the operation, from its early homebrews to its expansion and culture.
As the community mourns his passing, the Jackass Brewing family has asked for privacy and prayers for Winans’ wife and relatives during this difficult time. The brewery will continue operations as a tribute to his legacy, honoring the passion and vision he brought to life. May he rest in peace.
