Louis Benson Accident, HALIFAX, ENGLAND — Friends, family, and an entire community are rallying around Louis Benson, a young man from Halifax, West Yorkshire, who remains in critical but stable condition after suffering a severe brain injury in an accident while on holiday in Zante, Greece. The frightening turn of events on what was meant to be Louis’s first holiday without his parents has prompted an outpouring of support, with hundreds of donors contributing toward the cost of his emergency medical care.
Louis, who works at Engine Social Dining in Sowerby Bridge, had travelled to the Greek island with a group of friends and was reportedly in good spirits before the accident left him with a bleed on the brain. He was rushed to a local hospital and placed into an induced coma so doctors could begin treating the injury. Because the trip had not been covered by travel insurance, his family was left facing the added burden of arranging emergency transport and funding his care almost entirely out of pocket.
In the days that followed, Louis was airlifted to a hospital in Athens by the Royal Air Force for more specialised treatment, where doctors described his condition as critical but stable. His mother, Olinda, has been documenting his progress in a series of heartbreaking updates, describing how doctors are keeping him sedated while they monitor his brain activity, with plans to gradually reduce sedation to assess how he responds to stimuli. She has spoken of the pain of seeing her son in that state, while expressing hope and gratitude for the recovery process ahead.
As of her most recent update on June 14, Olinda said Louis continues to be stable, with doctors awaiting the results of another CT scan. The full extent of an eye injury he sustained will not be known until he is more conscious. She thanked supporters for their continued kindness during what she described as an overwhelming and frightening time for the family.
News of the accident spread quickly through Calderdale after Olinda launched an online fundraiser to help cover medical costs and get Louis’s father out to Greece to be by his side, while she stayed behind in Halifax to care for the couple’s other son. Engine Social Dining, where Louis works, shared the appeal with its own customers and followers, calling him part of their team and asking the community for support. Within the first 24 hours, more than 700 people had donated, raising over £20,000. As of the latest figures, donations have climbed to nearly £30,000 toward a £45,000 target.
Louis’s case has become a stark reminder of the risks of travelling without insurance, and of how quickly an ordinary holiday can turn into a medical and financial emergency far from home. For now, his family, friends, and the wider Calderdale community continue to wait, hope, and support one another as Louis’s recovery moves forward one day at a time.
Those wishing to contribute to Louis’s medical fund can do so through the GoFundMe page set up by his family, “Louis Benson Medical Expenses.”
This is a developing situation, and updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
