James Burrows Obituary, LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA — James Burrows, the legendary television director and co-creator of the iconic sitcom “Cheers,” has died at the age of 85. Burrows, who became one of the most influential figures in television comedy, passed away on June 19, 2026, according to a statement from his family.

Throughout his more than five-decade career, Burrows helped shape some of television’s most beloved comedy series. He was known for his work on shows including “Will & Grace,” “Friends,” “Frasier,” “Taxi,” “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” and “The Big Bang Theory.”

Burrows gained widespread recognition as the co-creator of “Cheers,” the long-running sitcom that became a cultural landmark. He also directed every episode of the original run of “Will & Grace,” helping guide the series into one of the most celebrated sitcoms of its era.

Born in Los Angeles in 1940, Burrows followed a creative path influenced by his father, writer and composer Abe Burrows. He later studied drama and built a remarkable career behind the camera, becoming known for his ability to develop strong ensemble performances and memorable comedic moments.

Over the years, Burrows directed more than 1,000 television episodes and received numerous honors for his contributions to entertainment, including 11 Emmy Awards. Colleagues and industry figures remembered him as not only a talented director but also a mentor who supported generations of performers and creators.

Beyond his professional achievements, Burrows was remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Debbie, his four daughters, and seven grandchildren.
